Christopher Jones, the Captain of the Mayflower, once lived here and is memorialized by two plaques mounted on his former home. Harwich is proud of its maritime history and as the home of the Mayflower The Harwich Society opened a small “Harwich and the New World Exhibition” featuring the Mayflower at the exhibition centre on Ha'Penny Pier. T.J. Dowling, Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in London took part in the opening. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants donated $500 toward the exhibit.
