At its April meeting the Board of Assistants of SMDPA voted unanimously to donate the series of books known as the “Five Generations Project Publications” to the Mengle Memorial Library, Brockway. This series of books traces descendants of the Pilgrims down through the fifth generation to the birth of the sixth generation children. The volumes have been carefully researched and contain the best documented genealogical data that is available.
One of 18 libraries in the state to have received these volumes from the SMDPA, Mengle Memorial Library is the only library in its region of Pennsylvania to have such a collection. With this donation, residents of Jefferson, Elk, Clearfield, Clarion and Cameron counties interested in early genealogies will no longer have to leave the area to access this information.
The Five Generations Project has been a 50-year effort of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and is on-going into the 6th generations and beyond. Updates and additional volumes will be provided to the library as they become available.
According to Darlene Marshall, Librarian at Mengle Memorial, previously planned renovations to the library will soon be underway. When completed, the library will have an elevator and additional new space that will house a genealogy room. It is expected the renovations will be completed by the first of the year. The volumes are a welcome addition to the genealogy room.
To encourage lineage research, SMDPA will offer seminars on the use of the books at the library, which is located at 324 Main Street, Brockway, PA 15824. A complete list of the 18 libraries appears on our website at http://www.sail1620.org/proving-your-lineage.html
